An interview with Steven Helm, Dean of Libraries

Radford University

What are your top three points of pride in your library?

  • The building: the beauty of the outside of the building, the 1930s-era Main Reading Room, the Archives Reading Room.
  • The friendly, professional staff who provide high-quality in-person, phone, email, and IM service to students and employees.
  • The student-centered classes, special events, and art displays.

What is (are) the most popular spot(s) in your library for your users?

  • The Library Commons, with computers/printers, several mediascape units, group study spaces, and individual study spaces.
  • The Main Reading Room.
  • Small study rooms.
  • Anywhere there’s a bean-bag chair.

Which VIVA resource or service does your school value the most, and why?

  • Interlibrary Loan services, especially in a time of shrinking budgets. And shared VIVA resources such as Safari Tech books and the EBSCOhost collection. VIVA resources are a great benefit!
