VIVA Featured Member Library: Piedmont Virginia Community College
An interview with Crystal Newell, Coordinator of Library Services, on February 14, 2017
What are three points of pride in your library?
I often refer to the Betty Sue Jessup Library as small, but mighty. We only occupy approximately 8900 square feet, but we accomplish a great deal within that space. We are a library bustling with activity and bursting with energy. It is invigorating!
We enjoy a great deal of support from both faculty and the administration. Because of this, we have established wonderful working relationships that help students to succeed.
My staff is amazing, dedicated, and hard working. We could not do the amount of work we do without them!
What is the most popular spot in the library for users?
The library recently underwent two small renovations which provided us with additional quiet study space. The quiet study room/library classroom and cozy alcove are immensely popular with the students. The group study rooms are by far the most popular space within the library for both serious studying and jovial gatherings in between classes. Equipping each room with a television screen made it easier for the students to accomplish both tasks.
Which VIVA resource or service do we value the most, and why?
Far and away, the most valuable resource is EBSCOhost. The multidisciplinary coverage of the database supplies most of the students' needs; nothing is more attractive than a one-stop shop.
