An interview with David Gray, Director of Learning Resources, on March 6, 2019

Lord Fairfax Community College

What are three points of pride in your library?

  • The quality customer service and support that our staff provides to our students, faculty and community patrons - and our user surveys back that up!

  • While we love our online resources, we still maintain and grow a large selection of print books for those with limited internet access or those who still prefer print. And it’s because of VIVA providing so many of our electronic resources that we are still able to devote a healthy potion of our own budget to print.

  • Like all VCCS libraries we are open to the public, so we function as a public library for a lot of folks in our service area. They can use our computers, check out books or films, or get help in filling out a job application.

What is the most popular spot in the library for users?

  • Our computers are popular of course, and students like our study rooms, but one popular spot is our wall that features collections of recent bestsellers, films and television series on DVD, and graphic novels.

Which VIVA resource or service do we value the most, and why?

  • EBSCO Academic Search Complete is the single most valuable VIVA resource for us.  It is our most heavily used resource and students across the curriculum find it useful.  Kanopy, the streaming video service, has been a big hit for us and we have even launched a library film series this year.
