VIVA: Whole Ebook Lending

Virginia's Academic Library Consortium

This guide has variable layouts and houses the majority of the "sub" pages for VIVA's website.

Whole Ebook Lending

Background:

In 2016, through an RFP process, VIVA awarded four contracts to Brill, Oxford, Taylor & Francis, and Wiley for eBook collections (see press release here). These titles are now available at VIVA public institutions. The RFP committee secured whole ebook lending rights from each of these vendors. The VIVA Resource Sharing Committee (RSC) recognized that ILL colleagues would need some guidance as each of these product platforms differs in both technical and contract specifications for loaning. Additionally, the ability to loan whole ebooks is new to many. To meet this anticipated need the RSC formed a task force in December of 2016 to test out loaning the newly added titles and based on that testing, to create general and product-specific recommendations to support ILL departments across Virginia. The task force disbanded in August 2021 and the work of whole e-book lending will be redirected to the Advisory Group as necessary.

Charge:

The task force worked to assess VIVA's Whole Ebook Lending program, revised recommendations and best practices, and provided support to ILL departments loaning and borrowing these materials.

Recommendations:

The recommendations of the task force can be found here.
