VIVA: Empowered Learning through Open Pedagogy Community Session
This VIVA Community Session will explore the topic of open pedagogy, a teaching approach highlighting experiential learning opportunities to increase learner autonomy, agency, and ownership. Xinyue Ren (Assistant Professor, Department of STEM Education & Professional Studies, Old Dominion University) will discuss their plans to redesign and redevelop a graduate-level online course to increase students' active role in open knowledge creation. Xinyue’s project - funded through the VIVA Open Course Grants Program in Spring 2024 - involves the adoption of two open textbooks and integrates the idea of OER-enabled experiential learning to redesign the IDT 7/875: Designing Online Instruction course to ensure alignment among learning. Kate McNally Carter (OER Librarian) will discuss how the University of Houston Open Education Services department has scaled support for open pedagogy using an internal guide, which articulates the scope and nature of support provided by the Libraries. Kate will also talk about how her experience with open pedagogy support has informed the ongoing development of the Texas Open Pedagogy Core Elements course, to be released in summer 2025.
