VIVA Open Textbook Network: System Leaders, Reflections on Year One

Jimmy Ghaphery

James Ghaphery (Virginia Commonwealth University)

"I am very excited that the VIVA OTN program was able to reach so many Virginia campuses and faculty in its first year. My hopes for the coming year are to continue the momentum and begin to see conversions to high quality open textbooks across the state. I would also love to see some significant consideration of how open educational resources might be used in high enrollment survey courses. Reducing financial barriers to education with effective and open materials continues to inspire me."

Olivia Reinauer

Olivia Reinauer (Tidewater Community College)

"I hope to continue to build on the momentum the VIVA OTN program has created. Last year was fun, successful, and a great learning experience. This year, we can look forward to offering additional faculty OER adoption workshops and tracking adoptions and other long-term effects from last year's workshops. I would love to have the opportunity to meet up with VIVA OTN campus leaders in person, either regionally or statewide. I would also like to see lively discussion on the VIVAOER listserv. Finally, I am excited to see what the next steps will be for VIVA's OER and affordable course content initiatives. The system leaders have lots of ideas and we want to hear yours (all of our VIVA colleagues) as well! Let's think about how we can support college students in Virginia with an innovative and sustainable plan for open educational resources and affordable course materials."

Anita Walz

Anita Walz (Virginia Tech)

"At Virginia Tech we're excited to continue supporting innovative faculty and championing student success by facilitating development and adoption of open textbooks and open educational resources beyond textbooks. Our open education grants program has launched for 2017-18, and we have several workshops already lined up. Follow news about all of the 'opens' at or on Twitter at: @OpenatVT."
