Renegotiation of Modern Language Association International Bibliography Contract Provides Savings and Brings New, Extensive Literature Resources to VIVA

The Virtual Library of Virginia
Fall Semester 2013

A contract recently negotiated by the Virtual Library of Virginia (VIVA) will assure that the Commonwealth’s students and faculty of both public and private nonprofit colleges and universities have access to state-of-the-art digital resources to support undergraduate core curriculum and the study of literature and languages. The multi-year agreement with ProQuest, a subsidiary of the Cambridge Information group with a record of seventy years of service to libraries, includes continuing VIVA access to the Modern Language Association (MLA) International Bibliography while adding indexes and full-text resources from five additional ProQuest databases:

  • Literature Online (LION), which combines the texts of over 357,250 works of literature with a vast compilation of criticism and reference, including the full text of nearly 400 volumes from the Penguin Classics series
  • The full-text Editions and Adaptations of Shakespeare
  • The full nine-volume Bibliography of American Literature
  • The W. B. Yeats collection, which contains the complete works of this important poet
  • Twentieth-Century American Poetry, with 500 volumes of modern and contemporary writing.

These extensive additions to the VIVA holdings were possible due to successful negotiations in reducing the cost of the MLA International Bibliography and cost sharing from three previous subscribers.
