The Virtual Library of Virginia
For Immediate Release (July 27, 2004):
Two years ago, the Virtual Library of Virginia (VIVA), students and faculty at all Virginia public institutions of higher learning gained access to 140 online journals published by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins (LWW), a prestigious international publisher of health journals. VIVA is pleased to announce that it has successfully completed licensing for over 100 additional titles from this publisher. For some titles, online full-text content extends as far back as 1995. These journals provide crucial, authoritative information for the research needs of Virginia’s future nurses, physicians, and clinicians in allied health fields.
The LWW journals are much valued and are among the most highly used journals provided by VIVA. Using the existing 140-title subscription during 2003, students and faculty at Virginia’s public colleges and universities viewed over 202,000 articles from LWW journals such as Critical Care Medicine, Current Opinion in Pediatrics, The American Journal of Nursing, and Circulation, Journal of the American Heart Association. While searching in an online periodical index such as CINAHL (also provided by VIVA), researchers have been able to link directly to the full text of an LWW article of interest. VIVA expects that the addition of over 100 new titles will boost access and use of LWW substantially beyond these already significant numbers.
The new titles add important journals which bring cutting-edge research on a wide array of specialties. Faculty and students researching the use of therapeutic touch for treatment of drug addiction will find current studies in Holistic Nursing Practice. Nursing students preparing for a practicum in a nursing home will find techniques for helping to orient patients suffering from dementia in Alzheimer’s Care Quarterly. Other journals in this new package include The Journal of Public Health Management and Practice, Ultrasound Quarterly, and Exercise and Sports Science Reviews.
The collection, available on August 1 through Ovid Technologies, Inc, is available with unlimited simultaneous use to all students and faculty at all of the public colleges and universities, from the doctoral universities to all of the 24 2-year colleges, and to the participating private colleges and universities.
VIVA, The Virtual Library of Virginia, is the consortium of the libraries of the 39 state-assisted colleges and universities at 52 campuses within the Commonwealth of Virginia. In addition, 30 independent private, non-profit institutions and The Library of Virginia participate where possible. VIVA’s mission is to provide, in an equitable, cooperative, and cost-effective manner, enhanced access to library and information resources for Virginia’s academic libraries serving the higher education community. The State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) sponsors VIVA, with support from the General Assembly and the local institutions.
