Contemporary Women's Issues Offers Global Reach - Now Available Through VIVA Institutions

The Virtual Library of Virginia (VIVA)
New for Fall Semester 2011

The Virtual Library of Virginia (VIVA) now offers Contemporary Women’s Issues, a multidisciplinary, full-text database with a focus on the critical issues and events that influence women's lives. In addition to more than 400 journal titles, Contemporary Women’s Issues includes newsletters, reports, pamphlets, fact sheets, position papers, statistics and more. Many of these materials are rarely indexed or cataloged and provide students and researchers with insight into issues such as domestic violence, affirmative action, alternative therapy, reproductive health, human rights and much more.

Worldwide coverage in Contemporary Women’s Index is extensive, with more than 190 countries represented. Users seeking information on “health” and “indigenous women” will find a wealth of materials with every corner of the globe represented in the search results. ¬†Additionally, search functions allow researchers to limit searches by geographic regions to quickly focus result sets.

Contemporary Women’s Issues is one of only a few databases focused on women and gender issues. ¬†“The inclusion of ‘grey’ literature and alternative press sources along with mainstream periodicals makes the database a comprehensive resource for this widely interdisciplinary area,” said Reba Leiding, librarian and liaison to the Women’s Studies Program at James Madison University. “Searching is designed to support users across the research continuum, from novice to expert searchers.
